Creating the User's European Digital Library
A brief history of The European Library as a collaborative
venture both in technical and organisational terms will be given. This networking
infrastructure is the basis for the European Council's decision to use The European
Library to create the European Digital Library.
The talk will then focus on the need to use what has already been achieved, such as Michael and to continue to work collaboratively, both technically and organisationally to be able to achieve the goals set out by the European Union in their press release of August 2006.
Finally the talk will outline the proposed cross-domain Foundation for Museums, Archives and Libraries and the thematic network EDLnet aims of creating both the human and political environment as well as the technical and semantic developments to deliver a "User's European Digital Library" prototype demonstrating cross-domain access for launch in the Autumn of 2008.
