MICHAEL-culture.org - A Gateway for Collections: Open Access
through Open Source Technology. How MICHAEL's Technique Works
The MICHAEL European Service provides access to a multilingual
inventory of the digitised cultural heritage in Europe. To achieve this data is gathered
from regional and national inventories provided by participating countries. Michael release
includes an open source software platform based on standards, a shared data model and an
organisation based on a distributed architecture using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol
for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) to gather the contents developed by the separate regional
and national instances. The presentation will focus on the technical aspects of the
developments provided by the Michael project to achieve their goals. Michael multilingual
functionalities are a major part of the service and will also be detailed.
