Digitisation of the Historic Press at the Biblioteca Nacional
de Espaņa
The Digital Newspaper Archive represents the outset of the
"Hispanic Digital Library" project, the aim of which is the public dissemination
via Internet of the Spanish Bibliographic Heritage preserved at the National Library.
In this first phase the public is offered access to the digital collection of historic
Spanish press contained at the Library, initially composed of 143 titles, published
between 1772 and 1933, which represents the possibility of consulting approximately
500,000 digitalised pages. This is just the beginning. The offer of titles will gradually
be extended to cover the historic evolution of the Spanish press. During 2007 it is
planned on progressively incorporating new publications edited in the 17th and 18th
centuries, as well as incorporating press headlines that are essential for the 19th
century study.
This digital collection has arisen with the intention of becoming a benchmark for research
and consultation of the Spanish historic press. In addition to providing reading and
consultation of texts, it offers information about the main digital newspaper archive
collections, thus facilitating a knowledge and access to the Spanish newspaper archive
heritage, which is today still partly unexplored.
