Dr. Karl-Heinz Lampe studied Biology at the Universities of Hanover, Vienna and Kiel. After working as a student assistant in 1979 at the Commonwealth Institute of Biological Control (CIBC) in Delémont, Switzerland, from 1980 to 1985 he served as a research associate at the Zoological Institute of the University of Kiel. The focus of his work there was on population dynamics in diversified host-parasite systems. Since 1986 he has been curator for diverse insect orders at the Zoologisches Forschungsinstitut and Museum Alexander Koenig (ZFMK) in Bonn. As head of Biodiversity Informatics at the ZFMK Dr. Lampe's responsibilities include the development of the specimen-based database BIODAT, a collection management and information system. Dr. Lampe will ensure that BIODAT will connect to major international scientific portals (BioCASE, GBIF) as well as semantic networks.
As project director he has initiated various projects in the context of the BIOLOG project (funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research) and the German GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) initiative. These include:
- DORSA, a virtual museum offering access to the Orthoptera in German museum collections;
- ZEFOD, the central registry of zoological research collections in Germany;
- DIG, the Digitisation of Key Insect Groups at the ZFMK, a best practise project in reference to the compilation of unique zoological research collections;
- BIOTA E15: Capacity Building in Biodiversity Information Systems for Plants and Insects in East Africa (at the National Museums of Kenya in Nairobi).
Dr. Lampe is also a member of the German Section of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility and IT Commission. He participated in the development of the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CRM), ISO 21127.
