Prof. Dr. Hermann Schäfer, Director General with the Federal
Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
Prof. Dr. Schäfer was born on 29 December 1942 in Trier and studied, among other subjects,
History and English in Frankfurt, Bonn and Freiburg. Following the conferment of a doctor's
degree and his habilitation in Economic and Social History, he worked initially as Head of
the Office for Culture and Public Relations Work in Waldshut County. Subsequently he was
appointed curator of the collection of the Landesmuseum für Technik und Arbeit (Regional
Museum of Technology and Labour) in Mannheim. From 1987 until 1990, he was Director and
from 1990 until 2006 President of the Foundation Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik
Deutschland (Museum of Contemporary History of the Federal Republic of Germany), Bonn/Leipzig.
Prof. Dr. Schäfer has published numerous works on economic and social history and on matters
related to museums and culture. He is extraordinary professor at Freiburg University and
honorary professor at Karlsruhe University. In addition, he is the Vice-President of the
German Commission for UNESCO.
In 2006 he was appointed Director General with the Federal Government Commissioner
for Culture and the Media.
